.......For
decades, one of the many royal duties of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand
is to accompany His Majesty the King during visits to people in all parts of the kingdom. |
||||||
........During
such visits, and after encountering instances of substandard living conditions,
among
some Thai people, Her Majesty graciously extended her assistance towards the relief of poverty by encouraging new types of employment to improve family incomes. |
|||||||
| ........Through
an interest in locally produced Thai handicrafts, Her Majesty arranged for instructors to help villagers improve the quality of their products. Having achieved the necessary skill levels, the villagers were then ableto sell their products to Her Majesty. |
|||||||
| .........This
project continued to expand and was formally established on July 21, 1976
as the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen , or “SUPPORT” for short. Subsequently, Her Majesty graciously agreed to chair the SUPPORT Foundation. |

........The
Head Office for the Foundation was set up at Chitralada Palace in Bangkok
after Her Majesty directed the start of a SUPPORT project in the palace compound on June 25, 1977. Later, in 1980, Her Majesty requested Mr.Tanin Kraivixien, privy councillor and vice president of the SUPPORT Foundation, to find a piece of land near Bang Pa-In for a second arts and crafts training centre. |
||||||
| .........Mr.Tanin
found twopromising plots of land which originally belonged to the Crown Property Bureau but were later given by His Majesty the King to the Government for land reform project: one piece of land was in the district of Ban Na, Nakhon Nayok Province, and another in Bangsai District, Ayutthaya Province. Their Majesties paid a visit to the second site covering 450 acres in Bangsai District on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. This, they decided, should be the location for a new training centre for arts and crafts. |
|||||||
| ........Following
the establishment of Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre in July, 1980, the Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperatives undertook management responsibility after assignment. The Office of Agricultural Land Reform had the task of overseeing site improvement and construction, and the 21st Infantry Regiment Queen’s Guard of the Royal Thai Army was assigned to oversee security and coordinate arts and crafts training at the Centre. Several other state agencies were likewise involved. |
|||||||
| ..........Her
Majesty Queen Sirikit presided over the inauguration ceremony on December
7, 1984 after which the Centre became “Bangsai Arts and Crafts Centre, the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand.” In short, “Bangsai SUPPORT Centre”. |
